Athletics 5, Orioles 2: Stephen Drew homered and Chris Carter drove in a pair to highlight a five-run rally in the third inning and lift host Oakland to its eighth win in the last nine games.

Jarrod Parker settled down to deliver seven strong innings and Josh Reddick and Yoenis Cespedes each singled in a run for the Athletics, who moved three games ahead of Baltimore in the wild card race and within two of the Texas Rangers for the lead in the American League West.

Nate McLouth homered and Mark Reynolds doubled in a run for the Orioles, who fell one game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East. Baltimore leads the Los Angeles Angels by 2 1/2 games for the second wild card spot.

Oakland trailed 2-0 entering the third but quickly got on the board when Drew led off the frame with his second homer. Orioles left-hander Zach Britton (5-3) struggled with his command in walking Coco Crisp and hitting Jonny Gomes before Reddick and Cespedes delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Carter’s two-run double down the line in right capped the uprising.

Parker (11-8) ended up holding Baltimore to two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. Sean Doolittle pitched the eighth and Grant Balfour worked around a pair of base runners in the ninth for his 19th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Reynolds appeared to injure his biceps on a swing and was attended to by trainers but stayed in the game. … Carter had been 0-for-12 in his previous four games. … Baltimore LHP Randy Wolf is scheduled to make his first start for the team on Sunday. He had been working out of the bullpen since being picked up late last month.
