Recap

Orioles 4, Blue Jays 0: Joe Saunders retired the first 17 hitters he faced and J.J. Hardy drove in a pair of runs as Baltimore blanked host Toronto.

Nick Markakis and Nate McLouth also had RBIs as the Orioles closed to within one game of the New York Yankees atop the American League East.

Baltimore also maintained its 1 1/2 game lead on Tampa Bay in the AL wild card race.

Saunders (1-1) was perfect through 5 2/3 innings before rookie shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria broke up the no-hit bid with a single to shallow center field. Saunders limited Toronto to three hits and two walks in 6 1/3 frames for his first win since coming to Baltimore in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hardy was the offensive catalyst, lining an RBI double down the left-field line in the fifth and adding a run-scoring single in the eighth. The veteran shortstop is 7-for-14 with a homer and four RBIs in his last three games against Toronto.

Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ (3-2) was solid in defeat, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out nine.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Baltimore improved to 59-0 this season when leading after seven innings. ... Rookie OF Moises Sierra misplayed a fly ball in right field that led to Baltimore's opening run in the second inning. It was his first error of the season. ... Toronto OF Colby Rasmus went 0-for-4 and is hitting .168 (27-for-161) since the All-Star break.
