White Sox 8, Orioles 1: Dylan Axelrod stepped up in place of injured starter Gavin Floyd and Gordon Beckham drove in three runs as visiting Chicago gave Joe Saunders a rude welcome back to the American League.

Alexei Ramirez added three hits, two runs and two RBIs and Alex Rios drove in a pair for the White Sox, who extended their lead over the Detroit Tigers to three games atop the AL Central. The Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision in Kansas City.

Axelrod (2-2), who was called up to take Floyd’s spot, allowed one run on three hits while walking four and striking out five in 7 1/3 innings.

Saunders (0-1), acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, was reached for seven runs (six earned) and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings in his first start with the Orioles.

Chicago got to Saunders right away, pushing across four runs in the first inning. The White Sox loaded the bases on two singles and a walk with one out before Rios slapped a two-run double to right field. Ramirez followed a batter later and sent a two-run single into right.

Beckham got into the action in the fourth, scoring Ramirez on an RBI double to left and greeting right-hander Kevin Gregg with a two-run single in the sixth.

Axelrod allowed his lone run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

Omar Quintanilla drove in the lone run for the Orioles, who dropped a game back of Oakland atop the AL wild-card race. The Athletics cruised to an 8-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The White Sox gave C A.J. Pierzynski the night off. He has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats. … Chicago RHP Jake Peavy (eye infection) is on track to make his scheduled start on Friday. … Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said before the game that top prospect RHP Dylan Bundy would not join the team for the stretch and will instead head to instructional league when the Double-A schedule comes to an end.
