Orioles 5, Royals 3: Mark Reynolds snapped a tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning as host Baltimore salvaged a split of the four-game series.
Rookie phenom Manny Machado homered for the third time in four major-league games and Nick Markakis also went deep for the Orioles, who entered the day one-half game out of a wild-card spot in the American League.
Royals starter Bruce Chen (8-10) walked a pair with one out in the sixth before being replaced by Louis Coleman, whose sixth pitch to Reynolds was lined into left field to plate Adam Jones and give Baltimore a 4-3 edge.
A free pass in the eighth also cost Kansas City, which had won four of five. Nate McLouth drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a passed ball by Royals catcher Brayan Pena for a 5-3 lead.
Luis Ayala (4-3) tossed a scoreless sixth to notch the win in relief of Tommy Hunter, who yielded three runs and eight hits over five innings. Jim Johnson worked a perfect ninth for his 34th save in 37 opportunities.
Baltimore took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Machado's homer that initially was ruled a double. After reviewing the play on video, the umpires determined the ball hit the top of the front wall and bounced off the back wall before caroming back onto the field.
The Royals pulled even in the fourth as Mike Moustakas hit a leadoff blast and Pena lifted a sacrifice fly. Alex Gordon scored on a groundout in the fifth to put Kansas City in front, but Markakis belted his 13th homer in the bottom half to forge a 3-3 tie.
