Recap

Orioles 2, Twins 1: Tommy Hunter outdueled Francisco Liriano with some help from Adam Jones’ two-run homer as visiting Baltimore snapped a three-game slide.

J.J. Hardy singled and scored in front of Jones’ blast for the Orioles, who finally slowed the Minnesota offense. The Twins had piled up 25 runs in winning the first two games of the series.

Hunter (4-4) got another chance in the major league rotation because of a series of injuries to the Baltimore staff and scattered six hits while allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings. The burly right-hander, who had allowed at least five earned runs in each of his previous three starts, struck out one and did not walk a batter.

For the second straight start, Liriano (3-9) posted double-digit strikeouts but was undone by the long ball. After punching out 15 over eight innings last time out, Liriano settled for 10 over six against the Orioles. The veteran left-hander, who has been the subject of trade rumors, yielded two runs on four hits while walking three.

The lone blemish on Liriano’s line came in the first inning, when Jones got an 0-1 fastball on the inside corner and belted it into the second deck in left field for his 22nd home run and a 2-0 edge.

The Twins threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but left-hander Troy Patton got Justin Morneau to ground into the shift at second base for the final out.

Jim Johnson worked a scoreless ninth for his 27th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Josh Willingham provided the lone run for Minnesota with his 23rd homer. Willingham has hit in six straight games and has four home runs in that span. … Jones has homered in back-to-back games and has four extra-base hits in the series. … Baltimore was awarded the fourth pick in the competitive balance draft held Wednesday. The pick will come after the end of the regular first round of the first-year player draft next June.
