Recap
Joe Thatcher walked Lyle Overbay with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks extended their franchise-record home winning streak to 15 with a 6-5 victory on Saturday.
Arizona forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back solo home runs by Chris Young and Overbay off Padres closer Heath Bell, who gave up two runs for just the eighth time in his last 124 appearances.
Overbay had three hits and three RBIs to help the Diamondbacks move 9 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco in the National League West with 16 to go and the Giants playing late Saturday.
Arizona’s magic number dropped to nine, and the Diamondbacks moved one-half game ahead of Milwaukee in the race for home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Bell gave up two or more home runs in a game for the just the fifth time in his career and first time since Sept. 11, 2006.
James Darnell hit his first major league homer for San Diego, which fell to 54-3 when leading after eight innings this season.
Arizona catcher Miguel Montero extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 18 games with a double off the center field wall in the sixth inning.
