Recap

Daniel Hudson pitched his third complete game and Lyle Overbay singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the visiting San Diego Padres 3-2 on Friday.

Hudson (16-9) won his career-best fourth consecutive start as he allowed two runs - one earned - and threw 107 pitches.

Overbay’s single off Chad Qualls (6-7) with two outs in the eighth scored Aaron Hill to give Arizona its franchise-record 14th straight win at home.

The Diamondbacks, who have won 15 of their last 17 overall, moved 8 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco in the National League West and dropped their magic number to 10. The Giants lost 2-1 to the Dodgers on Friday.

Justin Upton hit his 30th home run and second in as many games, and Chris Young broke out of an 8-for-75 (.107) slump with two hits for Arizona, which has won nine of the 13 meetings with San Diego this season.

Padres starter Mat Latos allowed two runs over seven innings, but struggled again after throwing 100 pitches. He gave up a run-scoring triple to Gerardo Parra on his 101st pitch in the seventh, which allowed Arizona to tie the score at two.

San Diego has lost 13 of its last 15 games.
