Recap
Charlie Morton pitched a second straight complete game against Cincinnati as the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates cooled off the homestanding Reds, 5-0, on Wednesday night.
Pedro Alvarez and Andrew McCutchen homered for the Pirates, who snapped a six-game losing streak.
The Reds saw their five-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 5-1 on the seven-game homestand. They also lost for the fourth time in five games this season to Pittsburgh.
Morton (5-1), who threw a five-hit complete game in a 6-1 win over Cincinnati on April 15, allowed just five hits and two walks in his third career complete game and second shutout. The righthander improved to 4-1 at Great American Ball Park and set a personal best with a third straight win.
The slumping Alvarez, who entered Wednesday's contest batting just .210 with one homer, hit a three-run shot to right off former Pirate Bronson Arroyo in the fourth inning to open the scoring.
McCutchen hit his eighth blast of the season in the seventh off Arroyo after Ronny Cedeno led off the frame with a double.
Arroyo (3-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in seven innings, becoming the first Reds starter in 14 games to suffer a defeat. Cincinnati starters entered 8-0 with a 2.37 ERA in their last 13 starts.
