Recap

Travis Wood became the latest Cincinnati starting pitcher to deliver an outstanding start, and the Reds finally got to Chris Carpenter en route to a 9-7 victory Sunday over St. Louis Cardinals and a weekend series sweep.

Ramon Hernandez homered for the second straight game and Brandon Phillips drove in two runs for the Reds (23-17), who completed their first home sweep against the Cardinals since Sept. 2007 to move 1 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis (22-19) for first place in the National League Central.

Cincinnati also snapped Carpenter’s long winning streak against the Reds. The 36-year-old Carpenter (1-3), who was 10-0 in his previous 11 starts against Cincinnati, was charged with eight runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Wood allowed back-to-back homers in the first to Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina before shutting down the Cardinals over the next five frames. The lefthander allowed two runs and seven hits as the Reds’ starting rotation improved to 8-0 with a 2.00 ERA over its last 11 starts.

Hernandez, who had his ninth career multi-home run game in Saturday’s 7-3 triumph, drilled his sixth in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1. Phillips, who drove in three runs Saturday, and Jay Bruce delivered back-to-back two-run doubles in the seventh that pushed a two-run edge to 8-2.

Aroldis Chapman walked four of the five batters he faced in the ninth, allowing the Cardinals to score four runs before closer Francisco Cordero squelched the rally for his seventh save.
