Rookie Rene Tosoni belted his first career grand slam and Anthony Swarzak won for the first time in 10 starts as the Minnesota Twins prevented their 100th loss of the season Tuesday with a 7-4 home triumph over the Kansas City Royals.

Rookie Chris Parmelee homered and fellow first-year player Ben Revere had an RBI triple for Minnesota (62-99), which is trying to avoid the second 100-loss campaign in franchise history. The 1982 rendition of the Twins went 60-102.

With the Twins nursing a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, Vin Mazzaro replaced Royals starter Steve O'Sullivan (2-6) and promptly served up Tosoni's fifth homer of the season and second in three games.

O'Sullivan was making his first start since biceps tendinitis put him on the disabled list. He permitted six runs on nine hits in five innings.

Swarzak (4-7) secured his first win since Aug. 3 after allowing two runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Rookie Johnny Giavotella collected three hits and Lorenzo Cain recorded his first RBI of the season with a run-scoring single for Kansas City, which fell for the fourth time in 15 games.
