Recap
Raul Ibanez ended the longest game in the history of Citizens Bank Park when his sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 19th inning gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 5-4 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Second baseman Wilson Valdez (1-0), who had never pitched professionally at any level, moved to the mound for the top of the 19th and tossed a scoreless frame. By doing so, he became the first position player since Brent Mayne of the Colorado Rockies (2000) to secure a win as a pitcher.
The game lasted 6 hours and 11 minutes.
Carlos Fisher (0-1) was in his sixth inning of relief in the 19th when he lost his command, allowing a leadoff single to Jimmy Rollins and then walking Domonic Brown. Placido Polanco advanced the runners with a bunt and Ryan Howard was intentionally walked in front of Ibanez, who lifted a deep fly to center field to plate Rollins from third.
Jay Bruce had given the Reds a 4-3 lead with his 13th homer in the top of the 10th, but Howard responded in the bottom of the frame with a blast of his own to keep the game going.
