Recap

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer after fouling a ball off his knee and Justin Masterson battled through seven innings as the Cleveland Indians defeated the host Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Friday.

Cleveland, which has won six of eight, remained 5 1/2 games behind Detroit in the American League Central.

After limping around home plate, Cabrera homered off Bruce Chen in the third and trotted slowly around the bases. The blast snapped an 0-for-13 slump.

Cabrera took the field for the bottom half, but left the game after one batter and was diagnosed with a knee contusion. Cleveland already has five regulars on the disabled list.

Masterson (11-8) allowed four runs in seven innings.

Cleveland led 5-0 in the fourth, but Kansas City scored in the fifth and sixth, and Alex Gordon's two-run homer in the seventh made it 5-4.

Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Chen (10-6) saw his five-game winning streak come to an end. The lefthander, who had beaten the Indians five straight times, allowed five runs in six innings.

Cleveland scored twice in the first on Carlos Santana's double and Jim Thome's single, and Jason Donald hit a solo homer in the fourth.
