Jered Weaver struck out a career-high 15 hitters in 7 2/3 dominating innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

Weaver (3-0) gave up one run and four hits while winning for the third straight time. Weaver’s 15 strikeouts are the most by an Angels pitcher since Chuck Finley struck out 15 New York Yankees in 1995.

Weaver was removed with two on in the eighth after striking out Jose Bautista for the second out. Hisanori Takahashi retired Adam Lind on a comebacker to end the eighth and Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his second save.

The Angels (5-4) struck in the first inning on Torii Hunter’s run-scoring single, and boosted the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a two-run, two-out triple by Peter Bourjos. A dropped fly ball by Blue Jays center field Rajai Davis earlier in the fourth set up the two unearned runs.

Toronto (5-4) put together three straight hits off Weaver in the sixth for its lone run. Jose Molina doubled, moved on third on John McDonald’s single and scored on Yunel Escobar’s single to left.

Weaver struck out the side in the third and fifth innings and struck out two batters in three other innings. He didn’t allow a hit until Travis Snider reached on an infield single in the fifth.

Weaver has allowed just two runs and nine hits in 20 2/3 innings.

Toronto’s Jo-Jo Reyes (0-1) gave up three runs – one earned – and six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.
