Recap

Russell Martin slammed a pair of home runs to back a dominant performance by Phil Hughes and the New York Yankees routed the host Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Friday night.

Hughes (4-4) limited the Twins to one run on two hits in 7 2/3 innings in winning his third straight start. He set down 14 in a row at one point, and his only mistake was surrendering a first-inning homer to Trevor Plouffe.

Martin clubbed a solo homer in the third and a two-run blast in the sixth to lift New York to its 10th win in its last 11 games at Target Field.

Mark Teixeira drove in three runs and Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano added RBI doubles to keep the Yankees one-half game ahead of Boston atop the American League East. Cano extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Kevin Slowey (0-1), making his first start of the year, was roughed up for six runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Minnesota has dropped all seven games in which Slowey has appeared this season.
