Recap
Curtis Granderson hit his 27th homer and Eduardo Nunez doubled in a pair to lead the New York Yankees past the visiting Oakland Athletics, 7-5, on Sunday.
Andruw Jones added two RBIs and a run scored for the Yankees, who have won six of their last nine to stay within shouting distance of the Boston Red Sox in the American league East.
The A’s, who lost two of three at Yankee Stadium over the weekend, have dropped 10 straight series to New York.
Oakland struck first with two runs in the second but could not get anything else done against Bartolo Colon (7-6). The burly righthander lasted seven innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four.
The Yankees wasted little time getting to Gio Gonzalez (9-7), pushing across a run in the second and two more in the third. Granderson’s two-run shot highlighted a three-run rally in the fifth.
Gonzalez entered with the fourth-best ERA in the American League at 2.33 but fell to 1-4 with a 7.27 ERA in five career starts against New York.
Oakland scored a run in the ninth but Mariano Rivera got Josh Willingham to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game and secure his 25th save.
Former Yankee Hideki Matsui went 5-for-5 for the A’s.
