Recap
CC Sabathia threw a complete-game shutout for his major league-leading 13th victory in the New York Yankees' 1-0 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Sabathia (13-4) tossed his first shutout and second complete game of the season to extend his scoreless streak to a career-high 23 2/3 innings heading into the All-Star break.
The Yankees' ace struck out nine and permitted only four hits to out-duel hard-luck loser James Shields (8-7), who absorbed his third straight loss after his own ill-advised pick-off throw plated the only run in the seventh inning.
Shields gave up only four hits – all singles – but was doomed to defeat after the Rays gift-wrapped New York's only run with a pair of throwing errors that snapped a scoreless deadlock in the seventh
After Robinson Cano singled to lead off the inning, center fielder B.J. Upton threw wildly to first on a fly ball, allowing Cano to move to third.
Shields then threw over the head of third baseman Sean Rodriguez on a pick-off attempt with two out to let Cano trot home for a 1-0 lead.
