Recap

Another starting pitcher was roughed up in the Bronx, only this time he donned pinstripes.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice off Phil Hughes and the Detroit Tigers (1-2) beat the New York Yankees (2-1) 10-7 Sunday afternoon.

The 24-year-old Hughes saw his velocity dip into the 80s during spring training and that’s where it tended to stay in his first start. Cabrera drilled an 80-mph slider for a two-run shot in the first then belted an 88-mph fastball for another two-run home run in the third.

Brennan Boesch, who homered off Bartolo Colon in the fifth, went 4-for-4 with four runs  and four RBI for Detroit, which collected 14 hits.

Hughes (0-1), who started 5-0 last year, gave up five earned runs on five hits and two walks in just four innings.

Max Scherzer (1-0) wasn’t much better for Detroit, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, including a career-high four home runs, in five innings. Jose Valverde followed Phil Coke and Joaquin Benoit and closed out the game for his first save.

Jorge Posada homered twice and Mark Teixeira went long for the third straight game. Despite the loss, the Bombers combined for nine home runs in the series -- their highest total through the first three games of a season.
