Recap

Brad Penny stated his case for inclusion on the postseason roster and Miguel Cabrera jumped up into the lead in the American League batting race as the Detroit Tigers topped the Baltimore Orioles, 10-6, on Sunday.

Victor Martinez and Don Kelly each hit three-run homers for the Tigers, who earned a split of the four-game series. Detroit remained one game behind the Texas Rangers for the No. 2 spot in the AL and home-field advantage in the division series.

Penny (11-11) appeared to be the odd man out of the rotation for the playoffs after a disastrous five-start stretch. But the burly righthander was solid on Sunday, holding the Orioles to one hit through the first four innings before running into a spot of trouble in a three-run fifth.

That knotted the game at 3-3 but Detroit quickly bounced back in the bottom of the frame when Martinez reached Brian Matusz (1-9) for his 12th homer.

Kelly found the seats in the following inning to put it away.

Cabrera, who gave the Tigers the early lead with a two-run homer - his 29th - finished 2-for-3 to raise his average to .341. That moved him just ahead of Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez, who went 0-for-4 against the Yankees to see his average fall to .338.
