Recap

Jarrod Saltalamacchia had a run-scoring double in the eighth inning as the Boston Red Sox edged the visiting Detroit Tigers 1-0 on a wet Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

Detroit starter Phil Coke and Boston counterpart Clay Buchholz traded zeroes through the first seven innings before rain began pelting the field. The game was delayed nearly a half-hour in the top of the eighth, and Boston finally struck in the bottom of the inning.

Carl Crawford kept the inning alive with a two-out walk off Daniel Schlereth (0-1) and scored the game's lone run on Saltalamacchia’s double to left-center field.

Daniel Bard (1-3) worked a scoreless eighth inning for his first victory in exactly a year. Jonathan Papelbon worked around a leadoff double for his eighth save.

Coke allowed three hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out four. Buchholz was equally stingy, surrendering four hits during his seven-inning stint with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Red Sox prevailed despite not getting a player to second base until the pivotal eighth. Each of Boston's first three baserunners was erased by double plays, two coming off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez.
