Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon.
Gwynn bounced a single to center off Brandon Lyon (5-3) to score Yorvit Torrealba as the Padres beat the Astros in their final at-bat for the third consecutive day.
Heath Bell (4-0) notched the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Lance Berkman hit a first-inning homer for Houston and tripled in the tying run in the eighth.
The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Aaron Cunningham’s two-run single.
Jeff Keppinger led off the Houston eighth with a single against Padres reliever Mike Adams and Berkman followed with a triple to right.
Padres starter Wade LeBlanc allowed one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Houston’s Brett Myers gave up two runs and four hits in six innings.
