Recap
Todd Helton’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 15th inning lifted the Colorado Rockies to a hard-fought 4-3 triumph over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
The fourth time was the charm for the Rockies, who loaded the bases in the 10th, 13th and 14th innings but were unable to push across the winning run. They succeeded in the 15th to post their 10th win in 13 home games.
Dexter Fowler led off the frame with his second triple - and third hit - of the contest. After Guillermo Mota (0-3) intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases, Helton lofted the first pitch he saw to left field, plating Fowler with the winning run.
Randy Flores (2-0) worked around an error in the top of the 15th for the win.
San Francisco had a golden opportunity in the top of the 13th, but Aubrey Huff was stranded at third base after hitting a leadoff triple. The Giants have now lost for the eighth time in nine games.
The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Fowler hit a one-out triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Herrera. Carlos Gonzalez doubled the advantage in the fifth with an RBI single and Chris Iannetta made it a three-run bulge an inning later with a two-out solo homer, his fourth blast of the season.
But the Giants rallied in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3. Pinch-hitter Nate Schierholtz led off with his second home run of the year and Andres Torres, who collected four hits, followed with an inside-the-parker off Jason Hammel. With two outs Buster Posey then hit a single to put runners on the corners and Travis Ishikawa delivered a base hit to center field, plating Pablo Sandoval with the tying run.
Starters Matt Cain and Hammel each lasted seven innings. Cain allowed three runs and six hits with four walks and six strikeouts, while Hammel yielded two runs and seven hits, walking one and fanning eight.
