Recap
Chris Denorfia and Nick Hundley hit back-to-back two-run doubles in the eighth inning and Felix Hernandez suffered his fourth consecutive loss as the San Diego Padres earned an 8-1 victory over Seattle Sunday at Safeco Field.
San Diego starter Mat Latos (4-3) allowed one run on four hits in six innings in his first interleague game To help the Padres win the three-game interleague series. Latos has allowed two runs or less in five consecutive starts.
Hernandez (2-4) allowed three runs – two earned – in seven innings, striking out six and walking one. But he received no run support, as often the story for the Mariners’ ace. Seattle scored its only run in the seventh inning, after Hernandez exited the game.
Seattle (16-28) has scored one run or fewer 10 times this year and managed just five hits against the Padres, who entered Sunday with the second-best ERA in the majors.
The Padres (26-18) broke open a 3-1 game with five runs in the eighth, highlighted by Denorfia and Hundley’s doubles. Leadoff hitter Will Venable added his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.
Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak in interleague games to 14 with two hits on Sunday. He is hitting .444 (28-for-63) in that stretch.
