Recap
Mark Ellis and Kevin Kouzmanoff each had solo home runs, Gio Gonzalez allowed two runs over six innings and the Oakland Athletics went on to a 8-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon.
The A’s, who improved to 30-13 in day games this year, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Daric Barton’s sacrifice fly.
After the Rangers tied it in the bottom of the third, Oakland regained the lead in the fourth with Ellis’ solo shot.
The A’s extended their lead with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, highlighted by Kouzmanoff’s solo blast to lead off the inning.
Gonzalez (12-8) surrendered five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. His biggest troubles came against Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton, who had an RBI single in the third and a solo home run in the sixth.
Rangers starter Colby Lewis (9-11) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. It’s the first time Lewis has allowed five or more runs since June 25.
