Recap
Cliff Lee increased his trade value with eight more dominant innings and Russell Branyan hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners avoided a sweep by trouncing the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Sunday.
Casey Kotchman added a three-run blast and Chone Figgins chipped in three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Mariners, who snapped a three-game slide.
Lee, who is at the top of the list for any team in search of a front-line pitcher at the trading deadline later this month, had his string of three straight complete games snapped but struck out 11 while walking one. The left-hander scattered nine hits while lowering his ERA to 2.34.
The Tigers grabbed a quick lead with three singles in the first, going up 1-0 when Miguel Cabrera pushed Austin Jackson across. But that was all Lee would yield, retiring the next eight hitters and cruising through the eighth.
Seattle gave its ace plenty of support in the third when Branyan’s shot put the Mariners up 3-1. Franklin Gutierrez drove in a run with a single in the fifth and Kotchman followed with his blast to put the game out of reach.
