Recap

The Detroit Tigers provided some late offense for starting pitcher Justin Verlander, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 Sunday.

The Tigers had just one hit all day before they got to Baltimore’s bullpen with a big eighth frame. Miguel Cabrera delivered the deciding blow with a bases-loaded double off David Hernandez to increase his RBI total to a major league-leading 116. Brandon Inge followed that up with a two-run homer, his 11th of the season.

Verlander (16-8) threw eight strong innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out 10 and walked only one to improve to 5-0 lifetime against the Orioles with the victory.

Mike Gonzalez (0-3) was saddled with the loss in relief of Chris Tillman, who allowed just one run on one hit over 6 2/3 innings. However, the youngster issued six walks while striking out four in his second start since getting called up from the minors on Sept. 5.

Baltimore’s Jake Fox hit an RBI triple, his first of the season, in the top of the fifth inning and then scored on a wild pitch from Verlander.
