Stampeders 34, Argonauts 15: Bo Levi Mitchell threw four touchdown passes to lead visiting Calgary to a comfortable victory over Toronto.
Mitchell was 16-of-24 for 267 yards, connecting twice with Jeff Fuller for scores for the Stampeders (2-0). Marquay McDaniel and Anthony Parker also caught touchdown passes as Calgary’s offence adjusted to the absence of star running back Jon Cornish.
Kicker Swayze Waters scored every point for the Argonauts (1-2), making 5-of-6 field goals - including one from 51 yards out. Ricky Ray completed 28-of-36 passes for 292 yards, but Toronto crippled itself with 154 yards in penalties.
Waters opened the scoring with a 44-yard field goal 2:26 into the contest, but Mitchell put the Stampeders ahead with a 58-yard touchdown toss to Parker on the final play of the first quarter. Mitchell hit Fuller for an 8-yard score 5:11 into the second quarter and found Fuller again for a 15-yard TD just 3:48 into the third.
McDaniel caught a 13-yard touchdown pass 9:50 into the third quarter, one play after Argonauts defensive back Dwight Anderson committed a 33-yard pass interference penalty. Stampeders defensive tackle Charleston Hughes stripped Ray of the ball to break up a solid drive midway through the fourth, halting Toronto’s last good chance at a touchdown.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Toronto's Chad Owens led all players with 102 yards on nine receptions. … Calgary used five different players on rushing plays for a total of 100 yards. … Argonauts RB Jeremiah Johnson had nine carries for 57 yards.
