The difference is, without a perfect 5th to 1ft...he could have been looking 7 or 8 dead in the eye.

You're missing the point. His belief that he can pull off any shot...brought in the possibility of 6-7-8. Going back to the tee would have brought in the chance of scoring better.

You said it exactly right, point is going back to the tee...he could have knocked it stiff and made 4. The unlucky duff happened because he was 1ft deep in the shrubs. I play golf once a week, and have tried that same shot many of times...it never ends well. When you play aggressive you bring in the possibility of duffs. Thats my only point.

It was a hazard, he hit 1 into the hazard...2 is pulling it out...3 is re-teeing. The penalty stroke is already occured. And if anyone goes back and re-tees and knocks it stiff to that pin...its Phil.
This is a conversation of what ifs. The only point I was making is being aggressive with the ego that "I can hit any shot" cost him. Just as quickly as it rewarded him on the back 9 yesterday...it cost him in 1 hole today.
