This game is 100% fixed. Not only was Portugals 1st goal a clean goal, nani who was called offside wasnt even remotely coose to being offside. If you have Portugal ML id be nervous.

Guess the admission of being wrong will come tomorrow
AND BY "TOMMOROW" HE MEANS "NEVER"
IN ALL SERIOUSNESS THOUGH, I THINK HE MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT THE OFFSIDE RULE GOT RESET AFTER THE BALL HIT THE BAR, AND NOT REALIZED THE OFFSIDE WAS WHEN THE BALL WAS FIRST SHOT INTO THE BAR.

if this is the future of soccer, where every goal gets reviewed.... i just feel they are ruining the sport. perhaps im old "school" in that mindset.
video replay SHOULD be used to determine if the ball crosses the line, I get that part. but when they start using it during the run of play and allowing those linesmen a 5-10 second delay "lets-see-what-happens-first" before making a call..... to me, thats just a slippery slope they are heading towards. if Pepes shot went wide, they wouldnt have said a thing. thats the problem im having/seeing with this. Chile got raped at halftime too didnt they? and having to review their 2nd goal was downright silly.

Spec, I think you and I could put down quite a few talking US Soccer and Italy in general :) I get all the worries about disrupting the flow of the game, but the problem is refereeing in this sport is SOOO poor - doesn't the fact that SO many calls are missed and there is SO much simulation in the game that goes uncalled disrupt the flow? There was a game last week where a penalty was awarded after a defender held onto an attackers shirt - it was so damn deliberate yet the shocking part wasn't that he did it, but that he was actually called for it.
It's not a perfect system so far, but at least they are trying to fix something that is very, very clearly a problem. And today, how does a linesman get every call where a guy is a hair offside correct but when there are FOUR of them offside, he misses it? Because his job, as simple as it seems is too hard for the human brain to do consistently - this isn't an argument, it's science.
I've long said soccer would be that much more exciting if they called offside correctly, whistled players and called penaltys for not just grabbing shirts but literally holding onto them in the box, and started handing out yellows and reds for diving in the box.
The problem with the latter point is that the risk vs reward for diving in the box is so skewed, why WOULDN'T you dive? It is practically never called or cautioned - shoot, how often have you seen a referee gesture to a player in the manner of "get up!" or "No,no,no, I'm not buying that" VERY emphatically but not pulling out his card? If the referee thinks it was a dive, then that is an AUTOMATIC yellow card and a red card at his discretion.
As it is, you can dive with no risk of repercussion but you MIGHT get the opportunity for a PK which is a 75% chance at scoring the hardest point to get in all of sports.
My solution would be, if a player goes down and needs play to be stopped for him he needs to leave the field for 5 minutes. If he needs a stretcher, then he stays of for 15. I GUARANTEE you the amount of time spent rolling around in agony goes down drastically.

totally agree. ya know how in the NFL theres that saying "theres a holding call on every offensive play, its just up to the referees to decide if/when they want to apply that rule" same goes with soccer. corner kicks...... in every corner kick into the box someone is getting sodomized. when ya see players running back to their positions with ripped shirts.......
but i sympathize with the side refs, offsides isnt easy to call. but ive seen where 4-5 occasions during these 3 games so far where the ref never raised his flag, its almost like theyre using the video replay as a "safety net" for whatever mistakes. ya just cant let the run of play go on and see what happens, goal gets scored and 'ohh- wait a minute' ehhh.
do you remember back in 2010, Lampards non-goal vs Germany? thats a beautiful example of how the replay can benefit the improvement of the game. but im afraid when they start getting ticky-tack with the rules and how its enforced its just gonna open up a whole new can of worms........ what about PK's??
every goalie on this planet moves off the line beforehand. are they gonna wait to see if the ball goes IN before applying that rule? thats what i dont like about this whole thing.
back in 02 Totti got red carded in korea where his leg was practically amputated on a tackle in the box. ref said he dived.
where does/would the line get drawn with all this replay stuff?
the WC is littered with cr*ppy calls..... Hand of God.... is a part of soccer lore, and as much as it was WRONG, i wouldnt change a thing about it.
regarding the diving....... the South Americans started all of that cr*p.... BLAME THEM!!!!!! and when youth soccer kids incorporate it into their offensive arsenal...... i kinda feel bad for the refs sometimes.

"I love VAR, so many championships' outcomes went to sh*t because of bad ref calls"
i figured you would.
nope. i still disagree with the whole VAR thing. use ystdays game for example, Vargas was just a butt-hair in front of that defender, i say play on. again.... the offsides would never have been called had no goal been scored. it wasnt a blatant/dumb mistake. yes, humans err, but if ur gonna let the technology decide every little thing, guess what? the refs are going to get even LAZIER knowing they have the booth to cover their butts. next thing you know 10, 11, 12-minute injury times will be the norm cuz everytime the ball hits the back of the net its gonna get reviewed??
Pepes disallowed goal had NOTHING to do with his shot, but it was during the BUILD UP towards the goal, a good 10-15 seconds before the ball hit the back of the net. I cant possibly see how this is gonna be good for the sport.
what about free kicks from the side? ya know where the defense sets up that line parallel to the goalie box, everybody is moving before the ball gets touched; and theres always one guy standing a shoulder blade in front/behind that line.......ya really gonna call offsides if he scores a header while the defender is pulling his shirt, pants or has both arms wrapped around him? i say "great effort/shot....play on."
but thats where this whole VAR is headed. the slippery slope.
