So in the process of redoing the basement and it's time to upgrade my TV. I was thinking about getting a big ass 60' - 70' inch set and was hoping to get some advice. I made the big mistake of getting a Sony a few years back and regret it big time. Ugly, blotchy picture! It seems like everyone I know always has issues with Sony.
Anyways, I was leaning toward Samsung as I consider them to be among the tops of not the top. Buddy has one and the picture looks just wonderful. Does Samsung make 60' - 70'? Is Sharp any good?

Just bought a Samsung 40" LED 3D 1080 120hz and love it. I don't use the 3D, but the extra lighting used makes the 2D picture amazing. Make sure you get 120hz refresh rate. There is also something newer you will see called Clear Motion Rate.... it is not the same as refresh rate. Mine has a CMR of 240...don't confuse the two. You can google that for more info. I did not go with the Smart TV, mainly because it is way more expensive and I would not use it much. Mine is basically just for watching games. I've never really seen a TV in those larger sizes where I loved the picture but they have usually been in rooms that were too small. I would definitely recommend Samsung after having Sony's for many years and a lemon of an LG a few years ago.

If you don't need a smart tv don't pay for it......same for 3D (dying out). I got a 60" LG 1080P plasma a few months ago for under $700........no glitz, no 3D, only 2 HDMI's..........but it's been good. Great picture....exactly what I wanted.
If you look at LCD tv's (everyone calls them LED but they're not....only LED back-lit) I wouldn't recommend one with only 120Hz refresh rate.......you won't be happy if you watch a lot of sports. They're ok for most everything else but I still see motion blur when I watch golf, football, baseball, etc. Go with 240Hz. I prefer plasma but to each their own.
Those big-azz Sharps (70", 80") you see are cool. The new "quad HD" or "4K" sets are the future. They are essentially a 2160P resolution.........twice the pixels of a 1080P set ( 3840x2160). I've seen a couple & loved em. No one broadcasts above 720P or 1080i right now, but when you look at an 80" screen with 4K it makes you smile. Pretty damn pricey though......
Stick with some brand names you're heard of & read some reviews. The technology is pretty much the same whether it's LCD or Plasma but there are some cheezy brands out there that I wouldn't trust.

Like Mugg said, I wouldn't bother with 3D and I could care less about a TV with apps and WiFi. You can hook up AppleTV / PlayStation / XBox and it would do alot more for less money.
Don't get anything less then 240hz. I believe all plasmas are 600 so you are safe there.
If you are a tree huger you may want to go with LCD as it uses less power.
I have a 55" Panasonic plasma and it's great. All of the colours show perfectly (blacks show better on a plasma vs LCD) and it never looks pixilated when watching sports.

In all seriousness why buy a tv? The projectors now a days deliver a very nice image.
I gave it some thought, but the way my basement is designed it just wouldn't be the ideal setup for me. I also feel as though you'd need to have a very specific setup and layout in order to make it work.
I think I've narrowed it down to getting a Plasma TV. The question is which one!

Samsung's 2012 LED HDTVs reportedly had a "built-in, internally wired HD camera, twin microphones, face tracking and speech recognition." Samsung responded to TV spying allegations of "facial recognition software, active camera watching, and microphones listening" by stating, "it reserves 'the right to share all Personal Data and non-Personal Data with' all app partners who will use it as they see fit'."
Korea University security researcher SeungJin Lee warned that if you own a Smart TV, "Do not allow your TV to see your bed."
You have got to be kidding me? A hidden camera and microphones in the TV's? Don't allow the TV to see your bed?

DO NOT get a plasma or an LCD big screen Your best bet these days is an LED. LED is the only way to go. The brand of LED TV doesn't really matter but the LED TV's absolutely have the clearest picture by far over plasma or LCD. Good luck.

Please give an example of a true LED tv that is affordable for the average consumer.

I disagree with your every sentence, except for the last one.
