This is far from a hockey crazed country ,most people you talk to don't even know the finals haven't been played yet. Its the same old story with NHL a Regular season that means nothing, Players that most people wouldnt know if they tripped over them or cannot pronounce there names.Mainstream announcers that aren't hockey guys and it shows,
No doubt people are missing out on a great game. But the league still to this day doesn't do what it should to make it popular . The players for instance when interviewed are boring period ,Every single player says the same thing .No show offs no calling out others ,all politically correct answers .Yes that's how it should be but that doesnt bring in the ratings The coaches basically the same Theres no flash no controversy,,even the fights, dont get the mainstreams attention because its legal its part of the game .In NBA or MLB a fight is big news. And while on that note the NHL season should not have its playoffs competing against the NBA it should be in Feb or March when nothing is going on . I remember they tried to get hockey in the mainstream after one of the few teams that bring national ratings the Rangers won the Cup that year They started having thoses sunday weekly games on NBC with that stupid red line following the puck on every shot,to help people follow the puck .That's it ,that failed miserably and they never tried anything else .This year there tring to build up that the 2 teams playing are part of the original 6 ,Big deal .Only the same hockey people are gonna watch .Most cant name the original 6 . Last year they cant remember who played People cant name 3 guys on either team .Most people last year were saying I didn't even know LA had a hockey team . The sport is not considered a mainstream sport in USA ,but the USA is the only reason there still is a sport. but for how long?If they want to finally get the sport up to par with the others ,they need some drastic changes.Golf and Nascar have better ratings . I know the purest out there will defend the game on its tough guy merits .Its stoic players who just go out and play hard and when interviewed always say the right thing ,but if you want your sport to thrive, they need to revamp everything from uniforms to when the season is played ,to there playoff format,to giving players nick names or shorten them so people can pronounce them to mainstream announcers that know the game ,and that's just a start. For me I hope hockey is around for a long time but . the way its going ,IM not so sure

Bob Cole could call a cricket game and I'd watch it. He is the best there ever was to me, his voice alone reminds me of the playoffs and true hockey even if he is going senile I'd still watch and rather listen to him then ANY other.. Jim Hughson is just a little too dramatic tho I don't mind him. The panel - well thats another story.. PJ Stock is the biggest joke on there pretty sure I have more hockey sense then this guy - actually I know I do. Glenn Healey makes for good TV, Weekes and Freidman can barely get a word in over Stock yapping like a little chihuahua just like he played. Get that guy off of TV..
CBC will always be the best for playoffs no matter what - if you grew up watching that, thats just the way it is. TSN is making strides tho. Not sure what its like for Americans just speaking as a Canadian.

So very true PBW , Cole has a great hockey voice and at one time could call the game......... now well his current body of work speaks for it self. Danny Gallivan was and still is King caller of hockey, D. Kelly from St Louis was pretty darn good as well.
Just saying right now Doc and Eddy O call a much better game than Hughson and Craig S.
Just a side bar PBW, Eddy O and Craig Simpson played Junior B against each other, now they are respective colour commentators?
