I would have picked Gomi, Kim, Nedkov and Franklin, putting me at 7 - 2 on the night. Oh well I'll take the 5 - 0 with what I had posted.
YTD: 82 - 39
Steven Siler vs. Darren Elkins
Preliminary Card | Featherweight | 145 lbs (65.8 kg)
Great fight here. Elkins is a grinder, he has excellent timing on his shots, penetrates deeply (lulz) and can finish with a single, double or body lock / trip take down. His top control is stifling but he is not much of a threat for submissions from the top or bottom. Elkins striking has come along but he still mainly uses it to set up his shots or to angle his opponent into the cage to set up the take downs mentioned above.
Siler is only 25 and sports a record of 21 - 9. He stands basically 6 feet tall at 5'11 and has a 70" reach, he is one of the larger 145ers in the UFC. Siler is very well rounded, his boxing is tight and crisp, his foot work and fight IQ are above average and he has decent head movement, his offensive and defensive wrestling are average and he has seemed to shore up his one glaring weakness - his submission defense. Out of his 9 loses since 2005, 5 are by way of choke. However his last submission loss was to BJJ ace Cole Escovedo in 2011, before that Siler had gone 4 years and 14 fights without being submitted while racking up 11 of his own submissions by way of Choke.
Prediction - Elkins may be able to stay on top long enough for 2 of the 3 rounds to grind out a decision (like his last three fights) but I just see too many ways for Siler to win here. Siler is better everywhere save for maybe straight up wrestling but the kicker is Siler already has good take-down defense and you better believe he has been training wrestling with Elkins as his opponent. I'm not sure that Siler stops Elkins so I'll go with Siler via Split Decision.
