The sudden scratch of I’ll Have Another shook up the Belmont Stakes and the odds along with it.
Without the Triple Crown hopeful in the field, Dullahan jumped from +450 to +200 and into the favorite's spot, with Union Rags close behind at +250. We talked to books in Las Vegas and offshore about the action coming in on the race since I’ll Have Another’s withdrawal.
Dullahan has drawn about 16 percent of the overall handle, according to Mike Pierce, an oddsmaker for offshore market Sportsbook. Union Rags has received 14 percent of the handle while Paynter is pulling in 11 percent of the money.
In Las Vegas, Paynter, which moved from +800 to +450 after I’ll Have Another withdrew, is also getting a lot of attention from Belmont bettors. He's down to +350 at some markets.
“That’s been the wiseguy horse so far,” Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports for the MGM Grand Properties, told Covers.
Rood says the majority of his action has come in on the favorites, especially Dullahan. However, he’s not quite sold on the favorite.
“They’re playing him like it’s an open book, but he’s not exactly” Rood says. “If Dullahan isn’t in the mix, there is potential for some big payouts with the trifecta and exacta.”
Other horses gaining some surprise action on race day are Unstoppable (+1,600) and Five Sixteen (+2,600).
