Around the rink: Saturday's NHL betting notes

Mar 16, 2013 |
Check out our betting notes on Saturday's busy NHL slate:

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-208, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Michal Neuvirth (WSH), Anton Khudobin (BOS)

The Capitals, who are 4-7-1 away from home, erased a three-goal deficit to defeat Boston 4-3 in overtime in Washington on March 5. Tuukka Rask allowed four goals for the second straight game in that loss but has held opponents to a total of three in three starts since. Washington is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-165, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Henrik Lundqvist (NYR), Marc-Andre Fleury (PIT)

Sidney Crosby has tormented many an opponent - and the New York Rangers are no exception. Pittsburgh's captain will attempt to continue his individual dominance and guide the Penguins to their eighth straight win when they host their Atlantic Division rival on Saturday afternoon. Crosby has 59 points in 42 career games against the Rangers - including an assist in Pittsburgh's 6-3 triumph at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 20 and another in the 3-0 win on Jan. 31. The over is 9-2-1 in the Penguins’ last 12 Saturday games.

Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres (-122, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ben Bishop (OTT), Ryan Miller (BUF)

Injuries finally may have taken their toll on the Ottawa Senators. After briefly weathering the storm, Ottawa has just one victory in seven outings (1-2-4). The road hasn't been kind to Ottawa, which has dropped 10-of-12 (2-7-3) since opening the season with two straight victories. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, who was felled by a season-ending Achilles injury, scored in both of Ottawa's previous victories over Buffalo - a 4-3 triumph on Feb. 5 and a 2-0 victory seven days later. The under is 5-0 in the Senators’ last five vs. a team with a losing record.

Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche (-118, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Niklas Backstrom (MIN), J.S. Giguere (COL)

The Wild defeated Colorado 5-3 at home on Thursday to improve to 2-0-1 against their division rival and have six wins in their last nine games. The Avalanche are 2-4-1 in their last seven contests and have fallen to the bottom of the Western Conference. The only positive for Colorado is its home record, which is 8-3-1, but it was blanked by Edmonton 4-0 on Tuesday - the second time this season the Avalanche have been shut out at home. The Wild are 6-0 in their last six vs. a team with a losing record.

Winnipeg Jets at Toronto Maple Leafs (-132, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ondrej Pavelec (WPG), Ben Scrivens (TOR)

Winnipeg, which has won seven of its last 10 games and notched points in each of its last five, defeated Toronto 5-2 on Tuesday and climbed into a playoff spot with a 3-1 victory over New York on Thursday. Both wins came at home, but the Jets have been more effective on the road this season (8-5-2). The under is 7-1 in the Jets’ last eight overall.

Montreal Canadiens at New Jersey Devils (+113, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Carey Price (MTL), Johan Hedberg (NJ)

The Eastern Conference-leading Montreal Canadiens attempt to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit New Jersey. The Devils have gone 3-1-1 over their last five contests after enduring a six-game winless streak (0-5-1). Montreal has won five of its last six on the road but has recorded only six wins in its last 28 visits to New Jersey. The Habs have played over the total in eight straight games.

Carolina Hurricanes at Tampa Bay Lightning (+101, 6)

Probable starting goaltenders: Justin Peters (CAR), Mathieu Garon (TB)

The Hurricanes are averaging 3.88 goals while winning six of their last eight games. Tampa Bay has lost eight of its last 10 games; scoring 22 goals in the span, but the Lightning have taken the previous two meetings with the Hurricanes. Tampa Bay was shut out for the first time this season on Thursday as it dropped a 2-0 decision to the New York Islanders and fell to 1-7-1 in its last nine home games. The over is 7-0 in the last seven meetings in Tampa Bay.

Phoenix Coyotes at Columbus Blue Jackets (+102, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Mike Smith (PHX), Sergei Bobrovsky (CBJ)

The Columbus Blue Jackets try to extend their franchise-record point streak to 10 games as they continue their five-game homestand against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Blue Jackets have gone beyond regulation in all but one game during their streak, with four contests being decided in overtime and four others in a shootout. Phoenix has outscored Columbus 10-4 while winning the first two meetings of the season. The under is 5-0 in the Blue Jackets’ last five overall.

New York Islanders at Florida Panthers (+107, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Evgeni Nabokov (NYI), Scott Clemmensen (FLA)

The Islanders have as many wins on the road (seven) as the Panthers do in any arena. Florida saw its winless streak extend to five games (0-4-1) after suffering a 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Thursday. The Islanders have recorded nine of a possible 12 points in the month. The under is 4-1 in the Panthers’ last five home games.

Anaheim Ducks at St. Louis Blues (-123, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Jonas Hiller (ANA), Jake Allen (STL)

The Anaheim Ducks did not need Corey Perry to run their winning streak to five straight games in Dallas on Thursday. They will be without the suspended star again as they attempt to extend their run when they visit the St. Louis. The Ducks have not suffered a regulation loss in any of the last nine games and have allowed a total of four goals during their five-game winning streak. The Blues have won four of their last five and are coming off Jake Allen’s first career shutout. The over is 5-1 in St. Louis’ last six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars (+120, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Corey Crawford (CHI), Kari Lehtonen (DAL)

Dallas attempts to halt its three-game winless streak during which it has been outscored 7-2. Following a 2-1 loss to the Coyotes in Phoenix last Saturday, the Stars were blanked by the Nashville Predators in the opener of their four-game homestand on Tuesday and dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Anaheim Ducks two days later. Prior to its skid, Dallas scored 19 goals over its previous five games. Chicago has won only eight of its last 30 visits to Dallas.

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (-155, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Jimmy Howard (DET), Roberto Luongo (VAN)

The Red Wings are 4-6-2 on the road but dominated the Canucks 8-3 when the teams met in Detroit last month. That kicked off a 1-4-2 stretch for Vancouver, which has since recovered to win back-to-back games. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (-148, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Antti Niemi (SJ), Jonathan Bernier (LAK)

The Sharks are coming off a 4-3 victory over the Kings Thursday. The four tallies were the most by San Jose since Jan. 27, when it posted a 4-1 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks. The club had scored fewer than three goals in 14 of its previous 15 contests. The over is 7-1 in the Kings’ last eight overall.
