The most dominant player in tennis, Serena Williams, is set to defend her US Open crown when the final grand slam of the year begins on Monday. Williams, a -105 favorite, has had a very good summer winning the first two tournaments she entered. In her third tournament of the summer (Cincinnati), she made it all the way to the finals before losing to her main rival, Vika Azarenka. Williams has had some nagging injuries this year and it’s difficult to back her at nearly even money to win another major.
Azarenka, a +360 underdog to win the US Open, has also had a successful summer series. She’s played in two tournaments; making the final in the first and beating Williams in a classic three setter. Azarenka has struggled with her serve at times, but was able to put it together late against Williams for one of her top wins of the year. The odds have gotten, but Azarenka is a reliable player and odds on to make the final. An open parlay playing Azarenka in each round will likely pay better than a traditional future bet.
American Sloane Stephens (+4500) has done well in each of the majors this year and will have significant crowd support behind her as America’s newest tennis star. Romania’s Sorana Cirstea (+17500) is a rising player who has thrived under coach Darren Cahill. She made a final in Toronto (losing to Williams), but is a player capable of making a run deep at the US Open.
