Where the action is: Panthers the popular play

It’s a quiet Monday for sportbooks following the Thanksgiving weekend.

It might be that the betting public is too stuffed full of turkey to get off the couch or it could be the lackluster matchup for Monday Night Football.

The Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles headline the Week 12 schedule, with books opening the Panthers as 2.5-point road favorites facing a struggling and injury-riddled Eagles squad. Most books are dealing Carolina -3 with early money coming in on the visitor.

“The plays we have taken are on Carolina, but it’s been very light,” John Avello, sportsbook director at the Wynn Las Vegas told Covers. “That’s not always a bad thing. These kinds of games, you don’t want a big decision riding on it.”

Avello says the motivation of the two teams along with injuries to Eagles QB Michael Vick and RB LeSean McCoy make this a tough game for books and bettors to get a grasp on, which could be the reason why many NFL fans aren’t touching the Monday nighter.

“Who knows what they’re playing for?,” says Avello. “I really don’t know what to think.”

As for the total, the early money came in on the under, moving the number from 41 to 40.5. However, like most standalone NFL games, bettors are drawn to the over and have currently pushed the total as high as 41.5 at some online markets.
