Alabama has violated the No. 1 rule for college football teams hoping to win the national title without going undefeated. The Tide went out late in the season, not in the early part of the year, and now the sons of Nick Saban are going to need a lot of help to get back to the national championship game.
The Tide tumbled three spots in the latest BCS rankings, which were released Sunday night, and now stew in fourth place, behind leader Kansas State, No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 Notre Dame. The Wildcats, Ducks and Irish all moved up a spot after victories Saturday while Alabama was giving up 20 points in the first quarter in an eventual 29-24 loss to Texas A&M. Western Carolina (no line yet) will pay the price for Bama’s loss, then the Tide will crush Auburn before the SEC title game.
Saturday’s results are reflected in the LVH SuperBook's updated odds to win the BCS title game. Oregon is now a 6-5 favorite to win it all, followed closely by Kansas State at 7-5. Alabama and Notre Dame, which need a lot of help to even get to Miami on Jan. 7, are both at 6-1.
The computers have deemed that, for now anyway, K-State is the No. 1 team in the country. The Wildcats give 11.5 at Baylor this coming Saturday before closing out the regular season at home against 8-2 Texas. With no title game in the now oddly-named 10-team Big 12, K-State seems well positioned to land a spot in the BCS championship.
All eyes will be focused on Eugene this Saturday when Stanford and its best-in-the-nation defense against the run tries to slow down the 10-0 Ducks. (We’d probably have to search long and hard to find another 8-2 team that will be anywhere near a 21.5-point underdog at kickoff.) Assuming Oregon takes care of business this coming weekend, the Ducks still have a nasty season-finisher at 7-2 Oregon State before a probable match with UCLA for the Pac-12 title.
Notre Dame, meanwhile, has played the tortoise for much of the season, moving up week by week as teams ahead of them falter. The Irish now sit in fourth in the BCS rankings with a nice round 10-0 record built on a solid defense, two overtime wins (Stanford, Pittsburgh) and the ability to play well in the final minutes of games. The Irish cede a fat 24 to 5-5 Wake Forest this week before closing out the regular season at USC.
