On September 6, the St. Louis Cardinals were 8.5 games out of the National League Wildcard. Most considered them dead, including Las Vegas sports books.
“St. Louis is one team we don’t want to see make the postseason,” MGM Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback told Covers.com in September. “It looked like they were dead in the water a little while ago. We had them at 500-to-1 (to win the World Series) and we took some bets on them there. They’re the one team we’ll be rooting against for sure.”
After stunning the Philadelphia Phillies, the Cardinals open the National League Championship Series in Milwaukee Sunday and will have one 19-year-old college student pulling for them more than most.
On Sept. 8, Covers member Idothis dropped $50 on the Cards to win the National League pennant at 400-to-1 odds. He’s now in position to win $20,000 if St. Louis beats the Brewers.
“Never over ‘till it’s over,” said Idothis, who asked to be referred to by just his first name, Brent, after communicating with Covers.com.
Before placing the wager, Brent posted this thread, asking Covers forum cappers for their opinion on his wager. Hilarity ensued, as people lined up to blast his decision.
“All i can say is WOW!!!! I know stranger things have happened but that is literally throwing $50 bucks away.... Your money would be better spent putting 50 bucks on a Super Bowl matchup future than to put it on the Cardinals to win the NL when they won’t even make the playoffs,” one critic posted.
Fortunately, Brent didn’t listen. After analyzing the Cardinals’ remaining schedule, he placed the wager that now has him in position to lock in some profit by hedging.
It wasn’t a smooth ride and you can read the dejection in Brent’s post after the Cardinals dropped back-to-back games to the Mets and Cubs in the last week of the regular season.
“Last 2 losses were a dagger. No way STL goes 5-0 and ATL at least 2-3. Not with that awful-ass bullpen. It was worth the run though!” he posted Sept. 23.
Two weeks later, Brent is hoping that “awful-ass bullpen” can shut down the Brewers.
The Brewers opened as -137 favorites in the series over the Cardinals.
