NHL betting: Home openers not kind to host team

Jan 24, 2013 |
A bettor would think the energy and excitement a home opener provides any host team in the NHL would produce a profitable bet the majority of the time.

That has not been the case this shortened season.

NHL teams have a combined 11-17 SU record in their respective home openers with the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks still waiting for their first cracks in front of their faithful.

The Sharks (-179) welcome the Phoenix Coyotes to the HP Pavilion Thursday night with the total set at 5.5, while the Ducks have to wait until Friday for the Vancouver Canucks to arrive.

Home openers for Western Conference teams have a combined 8-4-1 O/U record thus far.
