The Redskins reported Monday that Robert Griffin III has a Grade I sprain in his LCL, leaving his status for Sunday’s game in Cleveland at questionable.
We asked Aron Black, trade manager for bet365, about whether or not RG3 is the most valuable player to the spread right now in the NFL.
“I’m not so sure,” Black told Covers. "There are a few teams that would crumble if their starting QB went out due to injury, but I would say he’s in the upper portion of that echelon.”
That upper echelon includes Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers among others.
“Brady, Manning and to a lesser extent Brees, are the Montana to RG3’s Marino,” says Black, who believes Griffin can’t be considered in the same class as the others until he wins a Super Bowl.
So, how does Griffin’s worth to the spread compare to the other elite quarterbacks in the league?
“They are all worth between 4 and 7 points depending on game matchups, but I would lean more to a TD worth for RG3, Manning and Brees,” Black notes. “It’s hard to say exactly which one is worth the most, that depends on backups, style of offense, coaching, overall team strength, and who the opponents are.”
The Redskins got a sneak peek at the strength of their backup QB Kirk Cousins once RG3 succumbed to his injuries in the win over the Ravens. The former Michigan State Spartan fired a TD strike to Pierre Garcon and then ran in the two-point conversion with a quarterback draw play to tie things up and force overtime. A huge kick return from Richard Crawford got Kai Forbath in position to kick the game-winning field goal and complete the comeback.
Washington hopes it doesn't have to find out exactly how valuable RG3 is to the team on Sunday, but Cousins' relief performance on Sunday gives Redskins supporters some peace of mind. Books currently have the game off the board until Griffin’s status is updated but Mike Perry, oddsmaker for Sportsbook.ag, believes the potential loss of RG3 would make the Redskins underdogs.
“I would say Skins -1.5 with RG3 in the lineup and Browns -1.5 without him.”
