The Phoenix Coyotes were top dogs in the Pacific last season after being the proverbial underdog for what seems like an eternity. But they weren’t the only Cinderella team to prevail out of the Pacific. The Kings made a historic Stanley Cup run as the No. 8 seed in the West and are in good position to defend their title this year.
Below is a bettor's glance at each team along with some thoughts from Covers Expert Sean Murphy, which you can also find in his weekly NHL Power Rankings. Over/under season win total odds are from SportsInteraction.
Odds to win Stanley Cup: 45/1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 42-27-3-10, 50-32, 30-39-13
Season over/under win total: 21.5
Covers Power Ranking: 23rd
Key betting note: Only the Carolina Hurricanes were a better bet on the puckline than the Coyotes last season (50-32 ATS).
“Was last year's playoff run a fluke? Maybe. The 'Yotes rode the hot hand of goaltender Mike Smith all the way to the Western Conference Final but don't count on a repeat trip this spring.”
San Jose Sharks
Odds to win Stanley Cup: 20/1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 43-29-5-5, 28-54, 37-42-3
Season over/under win total: 24.5
Covers Power Ranking: 11th
Key betting note: The Sharks were the absolute worst bet on the puckline last season (28-54 ATS) despite having a pretty solid 43-29-5-5 record SU.
“The same old Sharks are back. It's hard to say how many more playoff runs the likes of Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau have left in them. Some would say they're due to miss the playoffs altogether. The reality should lie somewhere in the middle.”
Los Angeles Kings
Odds to win Stanley Cup: 10/1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 40-27-6-9, 37-45, 23-42-17
Season over/under win total: 25.5
Covers Power Ranking: 1st
Key betting note: The Kings scored the second-fewest goals in the league last year (2.3), but were an awesome under bet because of their ability to keep the puck out of their own net (2.1 goals allowed per game).
“The defending champs start the season at the top of the heap. With minimal changes, the Kings are poised to become the first repeat Stanley Cup winner since the Red Wings did it in 97 and 98.”
Odds to win Stanley Cup: 35/1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 42-35-1-4, 42-40, 32-40-10
Season over/under win total: 24
Covers Power Ranking: 14th
Key betting note: The Stars fell off the map at the end of last season, dropping five straight games. Now, Dallas may start the season without RFA Jamie Benn and has to cope with the loss of Mike Ribeiro.
“Dallas will be relying on some aging talent such as Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney in an effort to return to prominence. The loss of Mike Ribeiro hurts.”
Odds to win Stanley Cup: 40/1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 34-36-5-7, 40-42, 31-47-4
Season over/under win total: 23.5
Covers Power Ranking: 25th
Key betting note: The Ducks were one of the better under plays in the league last year with a 31-47-4.
“The Ducks are loaded, but that hasn't translated into much success in recent years, and I won't be surprised if they underachieve once again in 2013.”
