New Jersey racetrack Monmouth Park appears as though it isn't letting a little old thing like the federal courts get in its way to offer sports betting this fall.
The track is using some creative thinking with the help of partner and sports betting firm William Hill to ensure patrons will have options for wagering on their favorite leagues in the coming months. Fantasy sports were recently approved to be offered in casinos in New Jersey and on Monday, John Brennan of Northjersey.com reported the partners are working on offering "free play" sports betting at Monmouth.
It's not clear exactly how the free-play system will work but we should know more as things unfold in the coming weeks and months. It could be just an added reason to build a sportsbook within the track to prepare the facility for when sports betting does become legalized.
What is clear is that placing a wager in some form on a point spread or an over/under is on pace to becoming a reality sometime soon, though it may be in a different form starting out than the Nevada sports book style betting.
“One day sports betting will be legal in New Jersey. When it is, William Hill will be there,” William Hill US CEO Joe Asher said recently.
