Andrew McCutchen has the Bucs on top of the National League Central.
US PRESSWIRE
The MLB All-Star break not only gives players a few days away from the circus life of the big-league schedule but also allows books and bettors to catch their breath and look ahead to the second half of the slate.
During this down time, most sportsbooks post their MLB award props, offering odds on American and National League MVPs. Here’s a quick rundown of those odds along with a look at the favorite and a value dark horse bet:
American League MVP
Favorite: Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels / Robinson Cano, New York Yankees +250
Trout has been getting all the love for the AL MVP honor, batting .341 with 40 RBIs in the lead-off spot for the Halos. Mark Trumbo and Albert Pujols may be stealing some of his thunder, but there’s no denying Trout is the stick that stirs the drink in Anaheim. Cano, on the other hand, is furthering his bid as the best player in baseball. The Yankees share the top record in the AL and the second baseman’s terrific all-around play is a big part of that.
Dark horse: Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers +400
Hamilton is about the furthest thing away from a dark horse but at a discount price, we have to take him. Two months ago, Hamilton would have been the sure-shot favorite to win his second AL MVP. But, the Rangers dragged their feet into the break and their stud outfielder was part of that swoon. Hamilton, who is nursing a bad back, hit .223 in June and is batting just .174 in July, so it seems like the break has come at the right time.
Odds to win AL MVP:
Adam Jones +1200
Adrian Beltre +2500
David Ortiz +1200
Jose Bautista +1500
Josh Hamilton +400
Mark Trumbo +1200
Miguel Cabrera +800
Mike Trout +250
Robinson Cano +250
Field +500
National League MVP
Favorite: Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh Pirates / Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds
It’s all about the NL Central in the MVP race. Votto, who earned the league’s top honor in 2010, has the Reds fighting for the lead in the division, hitting .348 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs. The team Cincinnati is chasing in the Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates, wouldn’t be atop the division without McCutchen. The outfielder is hitting .362 (best in the majors) with 18 dingers and 60 RBIs, and could flirt with the triple crown if his power numbers continue to climb.
Dark horse: Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals +650
Beltran had the tough job of stepping into replace an MVP-caliber talent in Albert Pujols. And, if he can get St. Louis back to the postseason, there’s a good chance he could join Pujols among those named NL MVP. A lot of that is weighing on his weary knees. Beltran has slowed down a bit after such a fast start, batting just .154 to begin July.
Odds to win NL MVP:
Andrew McCutchen +300
Bryce Harper +1500
Buster Posey +1500
Carlos Beltran +650
Carlos Gonzalez +2000
David Wright +350
Joey Votto +300
Matt Kemp +800
Melky Cabrera +1500
R.A. Dickey +2000
Ryan Braun +800
Field +500
