USA, Dominican Republic co-favorites to win the 2017 World Baseball Classic
Whether you love it or hate it - the World Baseball Classic is back for another run prior to the 2017 Major League Baseball season. The world's best ball players (or most of them, at least) will divide into their countries of origin for the fourth installment of this "World Cup of Baseball".
Odds to win were released before Christmas but team rosters were just announced early in February so it's time to get serious about handicapping this event.
The Dominican Republic opened as the favorites in December at 5/2, followed by Team USA and Japan at 3/1. As expected, there has been a steady stream of betting on the American squad which has evened out the odds into a co-favorite situation with both the Dominican Republic and USA at 5/2.
Other notable line moves since the initial release are Venezuela going from 15/1 up to 10/1 and poor Team Canada moving in the other direction, from 25/1 to 40/1.
Japan won the event in 2006 and 2009 with the Dominican Republic taking the down the world title back in 2013. The United States has never finished higher than fourth (2009) and most critics believe the event will never become a success until it's won by the Americans.
The championship game will take place on March 22, 2017 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Here is the full odds table for the 2017 World Baseball Classic from Westgate LV Superbook:
