Thumbs down for Coco Crisp

CLEVELAND -- Indians outfielder Coco Crisp was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after spraining his right thumb while sliding into third base.

Jody Gerut, who hasn`t played in the majors since tearing a knee ligament in September, was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to replace Crisp, who may need three weeks to fully recover.

Crisp bent his thumb back in the first inning Tuesday when he was thrown out trying to stretch a double in Cleveland`s 13-5 win.

He underwent X-rays and an MRI. The Indians are sending the results to a hand specialist, said Crisp, who is on the DL for the first time. He`s hitting .283 with three homers and 11 RBIs and leads the Indians with 24 runs scored.

Gerut was hitting .438 with three homers and eight RBIs in 12 games at Buffalo. He has been working his way back to the Indians after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for tomorrow`s
