Flyers sign D Timonen to extension

The Philadelphia Flyers signed defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension on Friday.

Timonen, 39, has spent the past seven seasons with the Flyers. He was acquired in a trade from the Nashville Predators along with left wing Scott Hartnell in 2007 for a first-round draft pick.

Timonen has won five Barry Ashbee trophies as the Flyers' best defenseman. That includes the last three. He is second all-time behind Eric Desjardins, who won the award seven times.

Timonen represented Finland in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and played in his 1,000th career NHL game in March 2013. In his career with the Flyers, he has 38 goals and 232 assists.

Last season, Timonen had six goals and 26 assists in 77 games.
