Syracuse closes practice because of sports betting

Scott Shafer, the head coach of the Syracuse Orange football team, has frozen out the media from Orange practices right until the season opener versus Penn State, according to a report from Syracuse.com.

The coach refuses to let injury news and the status of his players influence how his opponents prepare for games against the Orange.

And also, so that player injuries do not impact betting lines.

An excerpt from the article on Syracuse.com reads:

Craig Trapp, a writer from the website FreePicks.PicksAndParlays.net, commented on the above quote in a piece published on Syracuse.com Thursday:

Schools are asked to release an NFL-style list of players who are out, doubtful, questionable, probable and certain to play after the practice two days prior to a game.

Now the only ones with factual information are the Coach and his insider friends. Seems legit.

3 weeks ago I could have gone to SU practices as he was holding them to hype a new start in the ACC for SU. The spring game was unilluminating as their "best" QB didn't show because he was a transfer from Okla. Last week practices were at Fort Drum in Watertown,NY and nobody was privvy. Betting Lines /Bullsh*t Shines, Shafer might have 3 Qbacks so according to Madden he hasn't got any. PennSt.@NJ is just the first of his worries and the straws he grabbed first were Betting Lines.

My first thought was trying to hide something for his own benefit....I know that could not be right, because the ncaa is such an outstanding police organization, and both agents are chasing Johnny football................

USC also does not report injuries. When they went w/o heir starting off linemen against thStanford, THAT wudda helped clue the bettors that USC was gonna have trouble blocking. Kiffin does not help bettors--but does he mae money with the info? You bet.

this article is senseless, and carries no value in connection with handicapping the NCAAF...by covers.comStaff? shallow, and extremely transparent...it's better to keep one's mouth shut, then divulge ignorance. it's clear the Orange have coaching issues and public relations that need to be addressed.

Agree with all comments (except for BWS77's bizarre contribution). Transparency is what levels the playing field. Lack of disclosure is what creates inside information.

The Orange has been more like a Tangerine in recent years. You would think they would be for anything that generates interest in their team, I guess you would be wrong...

Why does Syracuse have a responsibility to worry about changes in betting lines? Can anyone explain what this is supposed to mean? Because the way I see it, it means the staff of Syracuse are keen on the lines and may be playing them themselves.....

So apparently the Syracuse coaching staff bets on Syracuse games and needs some inside information. If this is any indication of how he will make decisions during a game, Syracuse should fire him right now and save themselves a lot of aggravation.
