MLB umpire Meals burns BoSox bettors with bad call

MLB umpire Jerry Meals is the ire of Red Sox Nation, and baseball bettors who took Boston +100 over Tampa Bay Monday night. The Rays won the game 2-1 as -108 road favorites, thanks to a controversial call at home plate.

Meals botched a call at home that would have – and should have – tied the ball game in the eighth inning. Red Sox pinch runner Daniel Nava was called out sliding into home on a sacrifice fly, even though replays showed Nava beating the tag by Rays catcher Jose Molina.

"What I saw was: Molina blocked the plate and Nava's foot lifted," Meals told reporters. "But in the replays, you could clearly see Nava's foot got under for a split second and then lifted, so I was wrong on my decision. From the angle I had, I did not see his foot get under Molina's shin guard."

Meals’ bad call cost Boston its spot atop the AL East, with Tampa Bay jumping a half game ahead of the BoSox for the division lead.

Monday’s road team win and under finish – final score played below the 8-run total – were uncharacteristic of Meals’ 2013 season. The veteran umpire has leaned towards home teams at a 59.1 percent rate, with host going 13-9 with Meals behind the plate. Games have gone 11-9 over/under with Meals calling the balls and strikes this summer.

If Nava goes half way, which he should have done since it's fundamental, he scores easily. If the ball is caught Nava is still in scoring position with only 1 out. The ump is getting a lot of the blame for this, and he should because he did miss the call, but Nava should get just as much for not running the bases properly. If Nava goes by fundamentals, he scores easily and that play never happens.

The Moron should have scored from 2nd on the double in the first and there be no need for this discussion.

I was on the Sox sadly, but what I don't get is why home plate umpires get behind the catcher looking them square in the back when there is going to be a play at the plate. MLB needs replay for this reason...

Meals is one of these guys who stand out when it comes to making critical mistakes. He had no chance to see the play but that's because he didn't position himself correctly before the play happened. Additionally: As the article states, please don't rely on trends. This doesn't come from a red sox bettor but from a red sox fan: Good lord Nava, how can you not score from second base on a double?

Because Nava thought the ball may be caught, which it almost was. He obviously didn't want to get doubled off 2nd, made the correct base running play. Hindsight is always 20/20.
