Stern, NBA warming up to Las Vegas

David Stern's press conference at the Wynn Las Vegas featured some surprising comments that suggest the NBA might be softening its stance on Las Vegas.

“Given sort of all the references you see about Las Vegas and ‘Sin City,’ we have always believed that gambling is a very legal business regulated carefully in Nevada, that this is a huge entertainment destination and this is a place that we should embrace,” Stern said.

This is a big about-face from Stern and the NBA compared to what we've been hearing from the New Jersey sports betting case. And it's about time.

The summer development league is thriving in Las Vegas and plans are in the works for a beautiful new arena at the MGM Grand. Stern stopped short of making any predictions that we'd see an NBA team in Sin City but he wasn't ruling it out either.

“I think Las Vegas is in the NBA history books," Stern said, "and with the discussions now, it seems that there is an arena that is getting closer to moving ahead after years and years of discussions.”

with the controls in place as well as electronic monitoring, the risk or perception that a Vegas NBA team could have fixed games, has been significantly mitigated. the UNLV football team covering regularly at home and not on the road is suspicious, but probably legit. I think the vegas locals would support the local team and visitors would almost certainly fill an arena if the the team is at least reasonably competitive.

I don't know IF Las Vegas, for all the talk, really WANT'S a pro sports team in the city OR IF we would really support it. I know that we would probably pass IF Stern made "NO NBA betting" a condition. that would be an automatic deal killer. that being said, NBA would probably have the BEST chance here. summer league is doing great AND it's a "baskets town" with the history of UNLV.
