Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

For the week of July 8-14.

Hot team: Tampa Bay Rays
Last week:  6-1
Season: 55-41
Upcoming schedule: at Blue Jays

Skinny: No team is hotter than the Rays heading into the All-Star break. Tampa has wins in 14 of its last 16 games, but hits the road for a nasty 10-game road trip beginning Friday.

Cold team: Houston Astros
Last week: 1-3
Season: 33-61
Upcoming schedule: vs. Mariners

Skinny:
The Astros only have three wins in their last 15 games and should be very active sellers leading up to the trade deadline.

Over team: San Francisco Giants
Last week: 6-1 over/under
Season: 49-42-3 over/under
Upcoming schedule: vs. Diamondbacks

Skinny: The Giants still played over the total despite Tim Lincecum’s no-hitter on Saturday.

Under team:
Pittsburgh Pirates
Last week:  0-6 over/under
Season: 39-52-2 over/under
Upcoming schedule: at Reds

Skinny: The Pirates have gone low in eight consecutive game, increasing their stature as one of the best under plays in the league.

There are always teams that look great before the break that are not there at the end .And visa versa .Im not sold on the Pirates yet ..Intresting to see if this very good but very Young pitching staff can hold up for the rest of the year with a team that's been putting up less offensive numbers as the year has progressed .Tampa seems like they have what it takes to stay the course Liking Baltimore and Boston to be there with out the Yanks in the discussion. Also keeping my eye on the resurging Dodgers and Angels No clear cut Favs really out there should be a close race in both leagues by mid august

TB Rays have been playing a beautiful baseball season long, but the hype stay around some other teams. By the time they resurfaced people will realise that a lots of damages has been dealt. As of late, I think they could be the team to win it all. But lets not forget about Pittsburgh Pirates. The team that has been pitching well first half of the season. In fact, they are leading the entire league with 3.07 ERA as a team. Bet against Houston Astros could be profitable but timing it rights is important as they can be up and down, just like San Francisco Giants game total.

"The Astros...should be very active sellers leading up to the trade deadline." Who exactly do they have to sell ? Bud Norris, maybe. This is a team which has committed to starting from the ground up for the future. They're not going to be selling 23 year olds for 22 year olds.
