Kovalchuk retires; Devils' futures holding steady
New Jersey Devils superstar Ilya Kovalchuk announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday but the team’s futures odds are holding despite the shocking news.
“It’s a tough one,” says oddsmaker Michael Stewart of CarbonSports.ag. “They (Devils) are listed at 40-1 right now as they’ve seen only two percent of the action to win the cup next year.”
Mike Perry, an oddsmaker for Sportsbook.com, has also opted to keep his Devils futures at 40-1.
Kovalchuk is walking away from the final 12 years of his current contract and $77 million dollars.
The 30-year-old had 417 goals and 399 assists in 816 games over 11 NHL seasons.
